This afternoon, my son got in trouble. He broke a trinket that was on our mantle and when I asked him how it broke, he shrugged and said, "I don't know. I think it fell by itself."
I was mad, naturally, because I knew he had done it, but how could I be creative in getting him to admit it?
"Who do you think did it?" I asked.
"It was Stripey!" A stuffed cat.
"Oh, okay." I said. "Are you sure it was her?" He nodded ever so slightly as I watched him. Then quickly shook his head. He knew Stripey would be in trouble, so he quickly changed his mind.
"Timblin did it!" Another stuffed cat.
"Hmmm, I was sure I saw Timblin sleeping on your bed
